FEATURED "PIC OF THE DAY" NOVEMBER 23, 2004
November 23's photo was snapped at Cochrane Yard Monday, November 22nd as northbound 421 readies for another 186 mile journey north. Engineman Jeff has just completed recieving permission to proceed as far as Mile 15 while Head End Brakeman Phil has just returned from lining up Cochrane Junction. It's now a waiting game until the "Blow N' Go" order from today's Conductor Tom.
We're about a week into this year's "Freeze Up" schedule where The Little Bear departs Cochrane a half hour earlier than normal (1045) to allow extra time for daylight helicopter flights to and from Moose Factory Island. During "Freeze Up" the usual form of transportation to and from Moose Factory (freighter canoes) are unable to function due to ice build up. Once the ice is thick enough, ice roads are constructed to enable vehicles to drive there from Moosonee. Until then Helicopters are the only form of transportation available to and from the island.
