A SPECIAL ARTICLE FROM JULY 2003
The gang from the Ontario Northland Railway Historical & Technical Society, a society made up of ONR Fans from across North America including myself returned to Cochrane Yard July 2003 for the 3rd Annual ONRH&TS Convention.
This year's tour of Cochrane Yard courtesy of both Gerry Loranger and Ted Hargrave was very interesting. Heck, I even found out some neat little factoids about my home yard that I wasn't even aware of.
Upon completion of the Yard and Shops tours, we all headed over to the home of local railway historian and train buff Dave Rudyk where we spent a great afternoon socializing and catching up on abit of Cochrane's rail history.
With the organising of this year's Convention being handled by a variety of Members, the event turned out to be the best so far. Not only did the Society visit Cochrane Yard, but upon completion of that, the gang headed to Englehart for some socializing, a tour of the operations there, and a great exhibition by members Bram, Jim, and Chet showcasing how a night time photo shoot is done. I unfortunately had to work that night and wasn't able to tag along for the remainder of the Convention's Itinerary. After an overnight stay in Englehart, the group headed back north to Timmins to see Kidd Creek Mine's Rail operations followed by a trip to nearby Iroquois Falls to tour Abitibi-Consolidated's paper and rail operations. Both tours were arranged by another ONRH&TS member Doug from Iroquois Falls.
To sum up, everyone had a great time and returned home with a little more knowledge along with an appreciation of what it's like to run trains in the Great White North.
